Seemingly unable to let go of identity politics in favor of, well, actually having decent policy ideas, House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn says he's simply astounded that California Sen. Kamala Harris isn’t “surging” in the polls in his home state of South Carolina, saying he “can’t figure it out” because “this just seemed to be the year of the black woman.”
Both Harris and fellow 2020 contender Cory Booker have "been a little bit of amazement to me as well, because I thought for sure that there would be much more of a surge and I can't quite figure that out yet," Clyburn told NBC News.
"Of course, I just thought Kamala because this just seemed to be the year of the black woman. I thought she would be surging a little more than she is," he added, suggesting that maybe Harris’ lag is because she "hasn't spelled out the policy stuff with her vision” enough to South Carolinians.
As of Friday, a Post and Courier-Change Research surveyof nearly 1,000 likely South Carolina Democratic 2020 presidential primary votersputs Harris polling at 9 percent, with Booker at just 5 percent. Former Vice President Joe Biden, on the other hand, handily lead the pack at 37 percent.
