As competing narratives emerge surrounding the attack of Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul on Friday, the man charged with the assault, Rene Boucher, has pleaded not guilty of assaulting his neighbor.

Boucher, who was charged with fourth degree assault after Paul was left with six broken ribs after the attack, pleaded not guilty on Thursday to misdemeanor assault. Despite Paul’s extensive injuries, the charge had not been increased to felony assault.

In the wake of the attack, there have been multiple rationales given to try to explain Boucher’s violent act. While some neighbors originally claimed Paul and Boucher had “heated” arguments about politics over the years, Boucher’s lawyer later claimed the injuries were due to a trivial dispute. The New York Times spoke to people who asserted the injuries were over landscaping conflicts. This led GQ to publish an article decrying Paul as being a “the worst guy to have as a neighbor.”

Seven other neighbors told the Washington Examiner the dispute was not due to any landscaping conflicts.
