Amnesty International has joined forces with the United Nations in pressuring Ireland to remove its ban on abortion.
In an interview with the Irish Examiner on Thursday, Colm O'Gorman, head of the Amnesty International's Irish branch, spewed rhetoric similar to that of the United Nations, stating that Ireland would become a "rogue nation" if it refused to comply with the organization's ruling.
The Nation's human rights committee recently called on the Irish government to adjust their abortion law because a young women had to travel out of the country for the procedure in 2011. Amanda Mellet wanted to abort her unborn child because of congenital defects the baby has been diagnosed with in utero. Doctors told her that her child would probably die in the womb or shortly after birth.
The commitee concluded that the laws forced Mellet to travel "to another country while carrying a dying fetus, at personal expense," adding,"This violated her right to freedom from cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment."
Ireland had supposedly subjected this woman to "intense physical and mental suffering" (cry me a river) and therefore the government was given a six-month deadline to respond with an offer of compensation.
I'm sure that Ireland's government officials are cowering in their seats.
A member of the Pro-Life Campaign, Cora Sherlock, called out Gorman on Twitter for his remarks, stating:
