Politics as Usual? 2020 Oscars Won't Have a Host...Again

While award shows have always been a place where celebrities are given golden soapboxes to spout whatever dumbass stance someone else told them they should care about, the Oscars seem to be content having no conductor to lead the chorus of stupidity from ringing out in their well-guarded halls.

Call it, as the Daily Caller so eloquently put it, the “Ricky Gervais effect” — at least this year.

ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke made an announcement at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour in Pasadena, Calif. on Wednesday that the 2020 Academy Awards will not have a “traditional host” this year.

“Let me confirm it now, together with the Academy, that there will be no traditional host this year,” Burke said.

If you remember, last year’s Oscars went hostess as well after the Twitterverse, a large portion of which doesn’t understand humor, basically got actor Kevin Hart removed as host following controversial tweets from years back. Essentially the alphabet mafia, otherwise known as the LGBT community, got Hart removed because of their continuing inability to take a joke.

Burke and seemingly the rest of ABC’s entertainment brass truly believe that they will see ratings for the awards show continue to trend upwards after last year’s hostless show saw an 11.5 percent increase in the ratings over 2018’s edition, according to The Hollywood Reporter (THR).

“We're having those conversations with the Academy right now," Burke said in a March interview with THR. "We are extremely happy with how the show went. Odds are you'll see us repeating what we consider to be a successful formula.”

It just seems like incredibly convenient timing that ABC would make this announcement considering Sunday night’s Golden Globes, where host Ricky Gervais “joked” about Hollywood and its stars.

““I mean, the companies that you work for, Apple, Amazon, Disney…if ISIS started a streaming service, you would call your agents, wouldn't you?” Gervais told the A-List audience to their faces Sunday night. "So if you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform to give a political speech. You’re in no place to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg. So, if you win, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent and your God, and f*** off.”

Couldn’t have said it any better myself. Then again, the Oscars won’t have a host to possibly rock the boat. Better get my tux ready in case they call!
