A spokesperson for Vice President Mike Pence mocked vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris for requesting that a plexiglass shield be placed between herself and Pence for the duration of Wednesday night’s debate after President Donald Trump tested positive for COVID-19 late last week.

"If Sen. Harris wants to use a fortress around herself, have at it," Katie Miller, Pence's spokeswoman, said Monday.

While a growing list of lawmakers and White House staffers who’d spent time near the president have since tested positive with COVID-19, Pence has so far tested negative for the virus. Meanwhile, a generally healthy-looking Trump returned to the White House Monday night after a several day stint at Walter Reed Medical Center, which the administration has insisted was largely a precautionary measure.

While it's a bit hypocritical given her supposed stance against walls to keep a person safe from foreign danger, Harris' request isn't original. Jaime Harrison, the Democrat challenger running against incumbent S.C. Sen. Lindsay Graham, erected a plexiglass wall between himself and Graham as a publicity stunt during their debate last week after it was revealed that Graham, who tested negative for the virus before the event, had spent time around several other lawmakers who’d since tested positive.

"Its not just about me, it's about the people in my life that I have to take care of, as well, my two boys, my wife, my grandma," Harrison said, while standing next to the partition supposedly meant to stave off an airborne flu and which only extended a few inches above his head.
