House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) will not hold a full House vote to authorize a formal impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump anytime soon.

At a press conference Tuesday afternoon Pelosi told reporters, “At this time, we will not be having a vote. And I'm very pleased with the thoughtfulness of our caucus in terms of being supportive of the path that we are on, in terms of fairness, in terms of seeking the truth, in terms of upholding the Constitution of the United States.”

Trump and Republicans on Capitol Hill have seized on the absence of such a vote as a clear break with House precedent.  They have called the current inquiry process led by House Democrats illegitimate.

When asked why she would not call for a formal vote on the impeachment inquiry Pelosi replied,

“Because we're not here to call bluffs. We're here to find the truth to uphold the Constitution of the United States. This is not a game for us. This is deadly serious.”
