During a press briefing on Wednesday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said it is “fraudulent” to claim American tax dollars have been used to fund abortion.

Pelosi was asked, “What do you say to your Catholic constituents who may relieved to no longer know that their tax dollars will go to fund abortions?”

“Let me just say this, I’m a Catholic. I have five children in six years. Does anybody have standing on the issue?” Pelosi began.

“And I think that what the—there has not been taxpayer dollars spent on abortions. You know that. So this is fraudulent. It’s fraudulent. And what they’re doing is making it more dangerous so that people can’t spend their own dollars in the exchanges to have access to reproductive rights. So we will fight that and my constituents support that.”

While the Hyde Amendment prevents taxpayers from directly funding abortion, tax dollars still fund Planned Parenthood, an organization which provides approximately 320,000 abortions a year. On Tuesday, the House of Representatives voted to permanently ban taxpayers from funding abortion. President Donald Trump also recently reenacted the Mexico City Policy, which bans taxpayer dollars from being used to support organizations abroad that perform abortions.
