The Ohio state Senate on Thursday passed a bill 24 to 7 requiring that the remains of abortion victims either be buried or cremated rather than disposed of as medical waste.

The bill, which has yet to be signed into law by Ohio’s Republican Gov. Mike DeWine, requires a woman who has an abortion to choose either burial or cremation for her aborted child, or the abortion clinic can choose for her. The abortion clinic is required to pay the costs, unless the woman chooses a burial or cremation site that’s different from the one the clinic offers.

Ironically, despite mandating that abortion victims’ remains be treated with the respect shown to any other deceased human being, nothing in the bill restricts a woman’s access to abortion.

The Ohio senate so recently passed what’s known as a “heartbeat bill,” which bans abortions once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, usually around 6-7 weeks. A similar measure in North Carolina has already been temporarily blocked by federal courts, while Mississippi, whose own heartbeat bill was signed just last week, is already being sued by abortion groups.
