Former vice president and 2020 Democratic hopeful Joe Biden during a campaign event in New Hampshire on Monday said that he would consider choosing a Republican as a running mate.

"I would, but I can't think of one right now," he said, in response to a woman who told him he would have to “pull all the stops” to defeat President Trump and asked whether he would consider a Republican vice presidential pick as a strategic move.

The crowd erupted in laughter, to which Biden replied, "No, I’m serious … Let me explain that.”

“You know there's some really decent Republicans that are out there still, but here's the problem right now ... they've got to step up," he said. “But there are an awful lot of people out there who are qualified to be vice president.”

As CNN reported, Biden has offered several different clues for whom he might contemplate as a running mate:

He previously said he would prefer to pick someone ‘of color and/or a different gender’ as his potential running mate. Biden has also acknowledged he'd think about adding Sen. Kamala Harris of California and Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts to his possible ticket.

He said during the campaign event Monday, however, that any speculation at this point would be "presumptuous."
