New York has increased the waiting period for certain gun purchases to ten times the original waiting period of three days.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.) and Democratic lawmakers support the increase in waiting time as a means to allow law enforcement enough time to conduct thorough enough background checks.

Fox News reports,

Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the law Monday and it takes effect in September.

Under existing federal law, gun dealers must wait three days before completing a sale if someone is not instantly approved by the federal National Instant Criminal Background Check System.

The sale could proceed even if the background check was not finished.

New York gun buyers will now have to wait 30 days for the background check.

Cuomo also signed a ban on the sale and possession of bump stocks on Monday and two other gun control measures on Tuesday, banning 3-D printed and manufactured firearms and mandating stricter regulations for gun storage procedures.

“3D guns and improperly stored firearms pose an enormous risk to our children and today we’re addressing both dangers head-on to keep our families safe,” Cuomo said in a statement entitled, "Enacting the Strongest Gun Laws in the Nation." “These measures continue New York’s legacy of enacting the strongest gun laws in the nation by helping keep firearms out of the hands of children and by acknowledging and addressing technological advancements like 3D printed guns.”

The NRA on Tuesday responded to the latest measure signed into law, saying these storage regulations should be options as the “policies ill-conceived, and potentially deadly,” forcing lawful gun owners “to render their firearms useless in a self-defense situation by locking them up.”
