After a video went viral this week that reportedly shows the shooting death of an unarmed black man by two white men in Georgia, NBA star LeBron James took to Twitter to claim that black people are “literally hunted every day” in America.

“We're literally hunted every day [and] every time we step foot outside the comfort of our homes," James wrote on Twitter on Wednesday night.

James linked his claim – which, of course, is about as far from the truth as one can possibly get – with a news story detailing the shooting death of 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery, which took place two months ago just outside Brunswick, Georgia. Arbery’s family said he was just out for his morning jog when he was chased down and shot by two white men, identified as former police officer Gregory McMichael, 64, and his 34-year-old son, Travis.

McMichael and his son told authorities they took up arms and followed Arbery in their pickup truck, thinking he matched the description of a man wanted for burglarizing several homes in the area. They confronted Arbery, who they said they believed was armed. The gruesome half-minute video shows some sort of a physical scuffle taking place near the truck, followed by gun shots and a black man's body falling to the pavement.

So far, no one has been arrested and no charges have been filed in connection with the shooting.

“Can’t even go for a damn jog man! Like WTF man are you kidding me?!?!?!?!?!?” James wrote on Twitter.

Arbery’s death, and the disturbing video that appears to show it in detail, ignited a firestorm on social media, with thousands attributing Arbery’s death to racial targeting and demanding his shooters be brought up on murder charges. But likewise have many Twitter users called out James for claiming that black people are “literally hunted every day” in the freest nation on earth, where James, one of the most famous athletes in history, makes millions a year to put a ball through a hoop.

In the meantime, Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp has offered the help of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to look into Arbery's death and make sure justice is served.
