Taking a cue from our neighbors across the pond, the New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority will reportedly be scrubbing the phrase “ladies and gentlemen” from announcements on trains and buses.

CBS New York reports that instead of “ladies and gentlemen,” the announcements will now say “passengers,” “riders,” or “everyone.”

MTA spokesman Jon Weinstein told CBS Local, “We’re fundamentally changing the way we talk with riders to give them better and clearer information.”

The New York Post claims the new MTA bulletin tells announcers, “Please don’t use any greeting other than these.”

According to AM New York, MTA managers and supervisors were told to “monitor for everyone’s compliance with these new announcements.”

In July, the London Underground also got rid of the phrase “ladies and gentlemen.” According to the director of customer strategy for the Transport for London, the move was in order to be “fully inclusive, reflecting the great diversity of London.”

New York City recently implemented a $250,000 fine for businesses that refuse to refer to people by their chosen gender pronouns.
