Manishkumar M. Patel, 45, was convicted on Wednesday of attempted first-degree intentional homicide of an unborn child from a charge that goes back all the way to 2007.
In 2007, Patel tried to slip the abortion-inducing drug mifepriston, into his (at the time) pregnant girlfriend’s smoothie. She never consumed the beverage, but had already gone through two miscarriages that year.
Patel was charged and forfeited a $750,000 cash bond. He went on a run and was arrested a decade later in New York after getting caught by U.S. Border agents while attempting to cross the border.
According to reports, after his arrest, his bond “was set at $20 million while the bond on the second felony case was set at $30 million cash.”
His sentencing is scheduled to be on October 9 of this year, but his conviction poses a much larger conundrum: it's interesting that attempted forced abortion is "homicide of an unborn child," while voluntary abortion is classified as "reproductive rights."
