Reckitt Benckiser, the parent company of Lysol products, has issued a statement telling people that under no circumstances should they inject themselves with household cleaners.

Seriously.

The statement comes after some in the media have accused President Trump of suggesting people should shoot up with disinfectants to combat the coronavirus – which he actually didn’t say, but hey, facts.

Here’s what Trump did say during Thursday night’s press conference:

Supposing we hit the body with a tremendous — whether it’s ultraviolet or just very powerful light. And I think you said that hasn’t been checked, but we’re going to test it. And then I said, supposing you brought the light inside the body, either through the skin or some other way.

And then I see the disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute, one minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning? Because you see it gets in the lungs and does a tremendous number on the lungs.

Now, it’s not a stretch to say that Trump, who’s not a medical expert in any way, shape or form, sounded a little ridiculous touting the idea of pumping “disinfectants” into the body to cure the coronavirus. Even if taken at its best, the suggestion lacked any semblance of medical specificity and was a fairly graceless way of explaining his point – which, arguably, was the simple idea that if we can clean the body from the inside, we can eradicate the disease.

But even at its worst, if one assumes Trump was literally talking about studying the use of Clorox injections, in no way did he suggest people march into their laundry rooms and start shooting up with bleach. But the same media who accused him of encouraging an Arizona couple to down fish tank cleaner sure want you to think he did.

At least Lysol’s message is clear: please don’t inject yourself with their toilet bowl cleaners. Now, if only that message were necessary.
