While President Donald Trump and Joe Biden battle it out in the last few key states for the White House, pro-lifers scored a major win in Louisiana, where voters approved an amendment stating that abortion is not a constitutional right.

The question put to voters on the ballot under Amendment 1 was whether it should be made explicitly clear that “a right to abortion and the funding of abortion shall not be found in the Louisiana Constitution.”

A full 62 percent of Louisiana voters supported the measure, joining Tennessee, Alabama and West Virginia in taking an official stance against abortion ahead of any fights to overturn Roe v. Wade in the U.S. Supreme Court.

Benjamin Clapper, executive director of Louisiana Right to Life, praised the public’s decision in a statement saying it ensures no judge in Louisiana can hide behind non-existent or implied language in the state constitution to protect infanticide, especially if Roe v. Wade were overturned and abortion rules were left up to the individual states.

"With the passage of this amendment, our citizens have mandated that state judges can never use our Constitution to enshrine abortion or the taxpayer funding of abortion in Louisiana," Clapper said. "We the people, through our legislators, can pass laws defending life without the intervention of judges."
