Los Angeles County will “almost certainly” keep its stay-at-home orders largely in place for at least the next three months, according to the county’s public health director.

Speaking at a Board of Supervisors meeting this week, County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said the local mandates will “with all certainty” stay in place for the next three months, adding that the county will only reopen its businesses and lift its shutdown entirely if they see a “dramatic change to the virus and tools at hand.”

The county has already banned evictions for all residential and commercial tenants and has frozen rent on some rent-stabilized units through May 31, and is debating whether to extend that mandate in line with the continued shutdown. The county has recently allowed some “non-essential” retail businesses to reopen, but only for curbside pickup. Beaches will reopen Wednesday for "active" use, meaning beach-goers will be required to wear masks when they’re not in the water, won’t be allowed to sunbathe, and won’t be permitted to bring coolers, umbrellas or chairs.

Basically, you can go for a walk on the beach, and that’s just about it.

“Our hope is that by using the data, we’d be able to slowly lift restrictions over the next three months,” Ferrer said.
