Harvard University rescinded the acceptance letters of at least 10 students after it was revealed they shared offensive memes in a private Facebook group chat.

The Crimson reports the paper received screenshots of admitted Class of 2021 students sharing memes in a group called “Harvard memes for horny bourgeois teens” that included off-color and offensive jokes about race, sexual assault, and pedophilia.

According to the Crimson, upon discovering the private communications, the school revoked the admissions of at least 10 students.

The Crimson claims that, according to a student whose admission offer was revoked, employees working in Harvard’s admissions office demanded the students in the group chat hand over their private communications in April. After disclosing their private discussions, Harvard allegedly asked the students to explain themselves.

An email obtained by the Crimson reads, “The Admissions Committee was disappointed to learn that several students in a private group chat for the Class of 2021 were sending messages that contained offensive messages and graphics.”

It continues, “As we understand you were among the members contributing such material to this chat, we are asking that you submit a statement by tomorrow at noon to explain your contributions and actions for discussion with the Admissions Committee.”

“It is unfortunate that I have to reach out about this situation,” the email concludes.

The Crimson claims the students who shared the memes were informed soon after that their admissions were “under review” and, a week later, ultimately received letters informing them their admission was revoked.

It appears Harvard is now implementing a harsher crackdown on memes than in the past. In 2016, admitted students were condemned—but not punished—for anti-feminist memes they shared in a private messaging group.
