“A government shutdown was 100 percent avoidable,” Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told the Senate early Saturday.

“Now it is imminent, all because Senate Democrats chose to filibuster a non-controversial funding bill, that contains nothing, not a thing they don’t support. Perhaps across the aisle some of our democratic colleagues are feeling proud of themselves.”

“What has it accomplished? The answer is simple their very own government shutdown,” he said.

Congress overnight failed to reach an agreement on a temporary spending bill to keep the federal government from running out of money.

Republicans have said the stalemate is the result of Democrats wanting the temporary bill to include protections for illegal immigrants brought as children to the United States, and have dubbed this the “Schumer Shutdown.”

“Schumer Shutdown” is what many Republicans have started calling the government closure. The House Republican website has even started a website schumershutdown.com, to dub the shutdown in Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D- N.Y.) name.

Many Democrats, including Schumer himself are trying to place the blame on the president, dubbing this the “Trump Shutdown.”

Some lawmakers held out hope Schumer and Trump would work out a deal earlier this week to avoid a shutdown, a move that reportedly was concerning to Democrats.

According to CNN, “Some Democratic aides for progressive members have been worried that Schumer would cut a deal and give away leverage on some of their priorities, but (Democratic Rep. John) Yarmuth insisted that the House and Senate Democrats are ‘in 100% agreement on this and totally working hand in hand.’"

Let’s just reflect on that last statement from Yarmuth on the failed negotiation leading to a government shutdown - House and Senate Democrats are “in 100% agreement on this and totally working hand in hand."

A Trump shutdown you say?
