In the wake of pride month, National Public Radio (NPR) published a guide to understanding pronouns and terms related to gender in cooperation with an LGBTQ activist group on Wednesday.

GLAAD, the progressive LGBTQ activist group, contributed to the guide with its stated goal of signaling acceptance and respect, according to the report.

The guide includes a glossary with definitions of 13 terms including gender-expansive, agender, gender identity, nonbinary, and many more.

Of course, it's not quite that simple. As NPR explains:

Some of the terms now in common usage are different from those used in the past to describe similar ideas, identities and experiences. Some people may continue to use terms that are less commonly used now to describe themselves, and some people may use different terms entirely.

These 13 terms, defined by NPR and GLAAD, were also taken largely from progressive sources such as the Trans Journalist Association, National Center for Transgender Equality, and Human Rights Campaign.

In addition to the glossary of gender-related terms, the guide includes a section titled “Pronouns: Questions and Answers,” in which it opines on the importance of using someone’s preferred pronouns despite their biological reality.

GLAAD communications officer Mary Emily O’Hara also pushed the LGBTQ acceptance narrative.

“Using the correct pronouns for trans and nonbinary youth is a way to let them know that you see them, you affirm them, you accept them and to let them know that they’re loved during a time when they’re really being targeted by so many discriminatory anti-trans state laws and policies,” O’Hara said.

In hopes to normalize the usage of preferred pronouns, the guide suggests that individuals should first state their own pronouns to signal acceptance.

“It may feel awkward at first,” O’Hara admitted, later explaining she identifies as a “they/them.”

And if you dare misgender someone?

The guide declares, “Simply apologize and move on.”
