Jocko Willink has quite the understanding of military issues, considering the extensive combat knowledge he earned as a former U.S. Navy SEAL. As North Korea continues to conduct missile tests, ratcheting up concern from other nuclear powers world stage, Willink has come up with new kind of solution: iPhone bombing.
Willink, now an author and news contributor dealing in military issues, took to Twitter this week with his latest suggestion:
Drop 25 million iPhones on them and put satellites over them with free wifi. https://t.co/kDmgrXulwH— Jocko Willink (@jockowillink) September 7, 2017
Although that may seem like an easy answer to an overly complicated issue, the former Navy SEAL found an ally in an expert on the North Korean crisis. Business Insider reports that Yun Sun, a researcher on North Korea at the Stimson Center, says the core concept could work.
Sun told Business Insider, "Kim Jong Un understands that as soon as society is open and North Korean people realize what they're missing, Kim's regime is unsustainable, and it's going to be overthrown."
As it turns out, people in South Korea had previously floated an idea just like this. Literally.
In a New York Times report, it was found that there are up to 50 "balloon warriors" in South Korea, many of whom are defectors from the north, who launch balloons containing informational leaflets debunking North Korean propaganda. These balloons are said to have contained radio sets, memory cards, DVDs, and even $1 bills.
The chances of this type of action being taken on a massive scale by a global superpower like the United States is pretty unlikely. In North Korea, foreign media intake could get a citizen killed. So although it's a nice thought to imagine the North Korean people freeing themselves from the cult of personality that is Kim Jong Un, chances are, mass fear will likely remain a strong deterrent.
