Flashback: Watch Pelosi, Reid, Baucus Praise Obamacare Architect Who Called Americans Stupid

Katie Rodriguez | November 14, 2014

Obamacare's chief architect Jonathan Gruber doesn't seem to have a lot of fans right now as more videos surface of him calling the American public stupid and gullible for supporting the healthcare law.

It seems, however, that Gruber wasn't the only one feeling this way about the American public.

Here are three prominent politicians who had a lot of positive things to say on the MIT economist's theories.

1. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) had some pretty positive feelings about Gruber's Obamacare predictions.

In this throwback video from 2009, Rep. Pelosi is encouraging the American public to read Gruber's analysis on what happens to those who obtain insurance through Obamacare.

“I don’t know if you have seen Jonathan Gruber of MIT’s analysis of what the comparison is to the status quo versus what will happen in our bill for those who seek insurance within the exchange," Pelosi said.  "And our bill takes down those costs, even some now, and much less preventing the upward spiral.”

Politifact reported Thursday that Pelosi denied knowing Gruber after his statements went viral, but found those claims to be false.

2. Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT)

In this video from a floor speech in December 2009, Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT) cites the Congressional Budget Office and MIT professor Jonathan Gruber as experts that show why the Senate's ACA bill is a good thing for the American public.

“In addition to the Congressional Budget Office, I might say that — that the — that MIT’s John Gruber has also done a study on our premiums and what does he conclude — he concludes, using Congressional Budget Office data, that the Senate bill could mean that people purchasing individual insurance would save every year $200 for single coverage and $500 for family coverage in 2009," Sen. Baucus said.

In addition to Baucus' hat tip to Gruber's work, he also mentioned that Gruber is one of the "best outside experts" in the field because he used computer models to help the CBO out.

"He’s got big computer models, he takes the CBO data and frankly, in some respect, he’s helped CBO by giving some information to CBO that [CBO] otherwise does not have."

3. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV)

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) wasn't as shy about endorsing Jonathan Gruber's work in 2009.  Sen. Reid openly praised Gruber's work as an economist for his work recognizing the benefits of Obamacare.

In fact, Reid liked his work so much that he directly quoted a line from that day's Washington Post where an article quoted Gruber as saying, "Here’s a bill that reduces the deficit, covers 30 million people — 30 million more people, and has the promise of lowering premiums in the long run."
