The Florida House passed a high-profile bill requiring local law enforcement agencies to cooperate with federal immigration authorities and banning "sanctuary-city" policies.

The House voted 69-47 for the measure Wednesday, sending it over to the Senate. If the Senate version passes and is signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis, the measure would ban sanctuary policies in the state and punish any local officials who limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

If they are found to be in violation of the bill, local officials could be removed from office, and local governments could be fined up to $5,000 for each day they have sanctuary-city policies.

The bill prompted the American Civil Liberties Union to warn immigrants against traveling to Florida because of detention risks.

“This is about criminal illegal aliens who are violating our law and making sure that we remove these bad criminal aliens and if we follow the immigration orders -  we remove them from the state of Florida,” State Sen. Joe Gruters said about the Senate measure in March.  “They want protection  - they should go to California or one of these other states that have these sanctuary policies.”
