It’s no surprise when families come together during the holidays and argue about politics. But it is surprising when that argument results in one of the family members being shot.

On Thanksgiving Day, an argument about NFL kneeling protests during the national anthem escalated to the point where a father allegedly shot one of his sons with a shotgun, CBS 17 reports.

Jorge Luis Valencia Lamadrid’s two adult sons began arguing during the family’s Turkey Day dinner, which led to a physical altercation between the two. Lamadrid attempted to step in and stop his children from fighting but was not strong enough, so he told his 21-year-old son (who'd apparently instigated the fight) to step outside of the house.

When his son refused to leave, the 51-year-old father decided he needed to take a more aggressive course of action and grabbed his shotgun.

The 21-year-old then saw a need to leave, but didn’t stay away for long. After returning to the home, he began arguing with his father, leading Lamadrid to pack his son's bag and throw it off the back porch.

Things got worse when the victim began throwing patio furniture.  Then, according to Lamadrid, he threw a water bottle and hit his father in the face, which caused Lamadrid to pull the trigger of his shotgun shooting his son in the hand and leg.

The victim is suffering from non-life threatening injuries, and his father was actually kind enough to ask his son if he was okay and called for help.

Lamadrid was arrested and has since bonded out of jail after being charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, according to CBS 17.

Maybe next time the family will learn to just enjoy spending time with one another and put politics on the back burner for a short time. Couldn’t hurt, could it?
