In addition to making college “free” and canceling hundreds of billions in student loan debt, Massachusetts Democratic senator and 2020 presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren is now promising that if she’s elected, her pick for secretary of education will be someone vetted by a “young trans person” to ensure they’re “absolutely committed to creating a welcoming environment” for LGBTQ youth in school.

This new criteria, she explained, is because she was recently asked by a transgender child (assumedly a nine-year-old student named Jacob, who questioned the senator last October during a CNN town hall) what she planned on doing to ensure transgender kids were safe in school. Warren said that “this person,” likely referring to Jacob, would be asked to interview any nominee on her behalf.

"I'm going to have a Secretary of Education that this young trans person interviews on my behalf, and only if this person believes that our Secretary or Secretary of Education nominee is absolutely committed to creating a welcoming environment, a safe environment, and a full educational curriculum for everyone will that person actually be advanced to be secretary of education,” Warren declared during a stopover in Iowa this week.

Warren also added that her nominee would “have to be someone who’s taught in a public school," taking a not-so-veiled swipe at current Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos.
