Dr. Ben Carson spoke to reporters after participating in a closed-door event with local politicians and businessmen in Harlem on Wednesday.

In his public appearance, Carson accused the Black Lives Matter activists of “creating strife” while ignoring the need to address the problem of homicide within the black community.

“Of course black lives matter,” Dr. Carson said. “But what I feel instead of people pointing fingers at each other and just creating strife, what we need to be talking about is how do we solve problems in the black community. Of murder, essentially.”

“For a young black male, in the inner city, homicide is the most likely cause of death. That’s ridiculous,” he said. “Most of those occur at the hands of other black males.”

“We need to be talking about why that is occurring. We need to be talking about how we can instill values into people again so that they do, in fact, believe that their brother’s life matters.”

He said that the black community needs to return to the values of “family and faith,” since those were “the values and principles that got black people through slavery and segregation and Jim Crowism.

“As we throw those things away we’re seeing terrible carnage occurring in our communities,” Dr. Carson said.
