Actress-turned-activist Alyssa Milano met with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) Tuesday to discuss gun control. Even though Milano admitted she was having “anxiety” over what the Senator represents.
“I woke up this morning with a panic attack," Milano said early on in the discussion. “I have anxiety. It wasn’t about you in particular. I think for me it was about what you represent and what I feel as a citizen of the country.”
Milano brought Fred Guttenberg, the father of a student killed in a Parkland Florida school shooting, with her for the meeting. The majority of the conversation ended up being between he and Cruz with Milano occasionaly chiming in.
Whille Milano and Guttenberg argued that lawmakers should try everything to ”save lives,” Cruz presented why he believes some proposed gun control measures are ineffective.
“I believe gun control laws that restrict law-abiding citizens are incredibly ineffective, I think they’re harmful, I think they actually cost lives. So you (Milano) ask 'isn’t it worth saving a life?’ - I don’t want to cost lives.”
“Almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500 thousand to more than 3 million,” Cruz later added.
“My point on this, it's not a rare and isolated instance. It's a lot of instances where people are facing the threat potentially of imminent harm, maybe physical assault, maybe sexual assault, maybe murder. And the fact that they have ability to defend themselves, to defend their family, defend their homes, keeps people alive.”
