Democrats Frolic in Puerto Rico During Government Shutdown

If it doesn’t seem like many people care about the current partial government shutdown, including Democrats, your assumption would be correct. And if you had any hope of Democrats and Republicans working together over the weekend to bring an end to the shutdown, well, some Democrats had better things to do.

According to a new Washington Post/ABC News poll, 82 percent of the “788 adults” polled said that they have not been “inconvenienced” by “the partial shutdown of the federal government.” Only 17 percent of respondents replied that the shutdown has either been a major or minor inconvenience to them.

The Left might be part of that 82 percent that hasn’t been “inconvenienced,” because an astonishing “30 Democratic members of Congress traveled to Puerto Rico this weekend — with their families and lobbyists” — according to Fox News.

“This year’s winter retreat promises to be our most widely attended yet with over 220 guests, including 39 Members of Congress and CHC BOLD PAC [Committee for Hispanic Causes] supporters expected to attend and participate!” a planning memo reportedly said.

But don’t worry about the tropical plight of those members of Congress who dodged the snow that blanketed Washington D.C. this past weekend. They had entertainment, in the form of the musical “Hamilton,” to keep them busy.

According to the Washington Examiner:

Some 109 lobbyists and corporate executives are named in the memo, a rate of 3.6 lobbyists for every member. They include those from several big K Street firms, R.J. Reynolds, Facebook, Comcast, Amazon, PhRMA, Microsoft, Intel, Verizon, and unions like the National Education Association.

BOLD PAC, the political arm of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, chartered a 737 for members, their families, and chiefs of staff to attend the weekend. The memo said the weather will be a balmy 80 degrees. The dress code is "resort casual.”

A spokesman would not identify the members, but Secrets obtained a list that included several congressional leaders. On the list was Speaker Nancy Pelosi, but an official in her office said that she did not make the trip.

So while people in parts of the U.S. were digging out of the snow, over a foot of it in some places, members of Congress were soaking up the sun and enjoying the government shutdown.
