Dem. Senator Calls FBI Probe Into Kavanaugh a 'Mockery' For Not Probing His College Drinking Habits

Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Ed Markey told CNN Thursday that the FBI investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh – the investigation that Senate Democrats have demanded, mind you – is now nothing more than a "cover up" by Senate Republicans and the White House.

Speaking to "CNN Newsroom," Markey dubbed the investigation a "mockery" of the Senate, saying, “It’s obviously a cover up.”

"The Trump White House, working with the Republican leadership in the Senate, have deliberately circumscribed this investigation so that only a small handful of people will be questioned,” Markey said.

The investigation has so far not included interviews with either Kavanaugh or Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who’s accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her in high school. However, the FBI does have hours of sworn testimony before the Senate Judiciary, along with sworn statements from each, making it highly unlikely that additional interviews would turn up anything new.

Moving the goal post, Democrats are now demanding that the FBI interview nearly two-dozen witnesses they say can provide corroborating testimony as to Kavanaugh’s drinking habits in high school and college, even though Senate Republicans have long stated any investigation into Ford’s claims would focus strictly on allegations that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her at a party in high school some 35 years ago rather than how many beers he drank as a teen.

But according to Markey, Republicans' refusal to shift from sexual misconduct allegations to a probe into the SCOTUS nominee's party habits as an adolescent is a "mockery of [their] constitutional responsibility."

"This is making a mockery of the constitutional responsibility of the Senate, the Trump White House has orchestrated it, the republican leadership has acquiesced to it, but ultimately, it is the American people who are being disserved by not allowing their elected senators to even read or understand … the total comprehensive body of knowledge … about this man," Markey said.
