With the accusation that Republicans are waging a “war on women” becoming trite, Democrat Representative Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) took to the House floor today to declare that Republicans have declared a war on the poor.

“With the release of yesterday’s budget, it’s official: Republicans have declared war on poor working families in this country,” said McGovern.

We have a new war, everyone. Not on ISIS, though.

“Yesterday’s House budget once again slashes safety-net programs that provide critical assistance to low and middle-income families while offering big tax breaks to the super wealthy,” said McGovern.

“I’ve seen this movie before, and I didn’t like it the first time, and I sure don’t like it now,” said McGovern.

The new House budget resolution that debuted earlier this week would make the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or food stamps, into a block grant program run by states. According to McGovern, this is a problem because states won't automatically receive new additional funding for increased demand.

"We should not be balancing the federal budget on the backs of the working poor, period. Cutting food assistance and making hunger worse in this country will not solve our fiscal challenges," said McGovern.
