Dem Candidates Clash Over NRA to Show Who’s ‘Tough Enough’

During the first Democratic debate in Las Vegas on Tuesday night, the National Rifle Association became a surprise source of tension among candidates Hillary Clinton, Vermont senator Bernie Sanders, and former Maryland governor Martin O’Malley.

They all agreed on certain measures such as background checks, but fought tooth and nail to show the audience just how much tougher they are on gun control than their fellow contenders.

“No, [Sanders is] not at all [tough on guns],” Clinton fired. “It’s time the entire country stood up against the NRA.”

“The views on gun control in rural states are different from urban states, whether we like it or not,” said Bernie. You wouldn't know, because "you have not been in the United States Congress," he fired.

During the heated exchange, O’Malley chimed in to say, “I’m glad we’re talking about all of these things, but I’ve actually done them.”

He then turned towards Clinton, who has a well-documented tendency to flip-flop her views on issues.

“We’ve passed comprehensive gun safety legislation – not by looking at the polls,” said O’Malley. “We actually did it.”
