The Daily Mail Claims Austin Bomber Was a 'Devout Christian,' But Offers No Proof

According to the Daily Mail, the recently ID’d serial bomber responsible for killing two and injuring five others in Austin, Texas this week was a “devout Christian.”

Not because he actually was one. In fact, given his violent actions and their 180-degree deviance from the teachings of Christ, I’d argue pretty strongly that he wasn’t. Not even a little bit.

Interestingly, the Daily Mail’s article itself doesn’t make a single mention of the bomber being a Christian, other than noting that a few posts on the guy’s social media accounts from back in 2012 indicate that he was against gay marriage and abortion.

“He doesn't appear to have left much of a trail on social media but his blog posts from 2012 indicate he was in favor of the death penalty and was against gay marriage and abortion. He identified himself as a conservative but said he was not politically engaged and said he had interests in tennis, parkour and gymnastics,” the article notes.

Nowhere in the article is the killer quoted as even claiming to be Christian, much less living as a “devout” one.

But a total lack of evidence for the bomber’s supposed deep-seated faith didn’t stop the outlet from simply assuming he was one and plastering it all over their headline:

This isn’t the first time a major news outlet has linked a mass murderer to Christianity simply by assumption. Last year, Newsweek labeled the Las Vegas shooter a “Christian by birth, if not belief” simply because the killer was a middle-aged white male.
