On The Kelly File Thursday night, Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz voiced his support for the Kentucky clerk who was jailed for refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses.

He called the arrest of Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis “an outrage” and advocated for her release.

“What happened today is an outrage,” said the Texas senator. “It is fundamentally wrong.”

“We’re seeing a Christian woman thrown in jail for standing up for her faith.”

Cruz argued that the judge who ordered for Ms. Davis's arrest is infringing upon her First Amendment right to religious freedom, and that the very action goes against how "our nation was forged by people fleeing religious persecution."

“I stand with Ms. Kim Davis unequivocally," he stated.

"I stand with her and anyone else that the government is trying to persecute for standing up for their faith.”

It is unclear when Ms. Davis will be released, as it is dependent upon her compliance with the judge’s order to issue marriage licenses to gay couples.
