Confederate, Israeli Flags In an NYC Home Covered After an Offended Leftist Breaks the Window

After enduring rocks thrown at his home, a broken window, and a lawsuit by his landlord, the renter of the East Village apartment who displays Confederate and Israeli flags has covered his windows with white drapes.

The saga began when East Eighth Street unit resident William Green’s Confederate flag display made the news in the wake of the violence in Charlottesville. On Aug. 17, an angry neighbor threw rocks at Green’s window while yelling, “Tell that n****r to take his flag down or I’m breaking all those windows, I don’t give a f**k!” and “My kids gotta see that s**t, mother**ker!”

On Aug. 18, PIX11 reported one of the windows of the apartment was broken and a 34-year-old man was arrested as a result. In a post on Instagram, 34-year-old Darren Keen admitted to punching out the window and bragged about yelling, “f**k white supremacy!” while getting into the police car:

On Aug. 21, the New York Daily News reported the owner of the building, Charles Yassky, filed a suit with Manhattan Supreme Court arguing Green violated his lease by hanging up the flags.

The New York Daily News claims in the affidavit, Yassky described Green as a “clearly disturbed individual” and said the flags cause a “clear and present danger to the community and residents of the building.”

Yassky called the flags in the windows a “sociopathic exercise” and asserted it violates the “objectionable conduct” part of the lease.

According to DNAInfo, Green’s apartment is covered by the Rent Stabilization Code, which, according to the New York Times, requires the landlord to provide notice to the tenant to cease the “objectionable” activity before issuing an termination notice.

Just two days after filing the suit, however, Yassky allegedly dropped it.

After Green called the uproar over his flags a “criminal abuse of freedom of speech” in the New York Post, the outlet reports that the flags have since been covered with white drapes. Previously, the flags were allegedly covered with tarps by the building management. Gothamist reports the flags were removed as early as Aug. 19:

During the uproar, Green reportedly emailed his landlord, “I’ve had those flags up for over a year. I find all the alleged commotion while I’m on vacation a little suspicious. I’ll be back in the city on Tuesday, you can update me then. Whatever the drama, ‘this too shall pass.’ (like the eclipse).”

Speaking to DNAInfo, Green said he would have removed the flags earlier if he was not on vacation with his boyfriend at the time of the Charlottesville riots.

“If I was here in the city when all of that happened I likely would have taken them down myself, but I was not here when that happened,” he said.

“If my neighbors had come to me, face to face, then I would have [taken them down],” he continued.

Speaking of Yassky, Green said, "He was panicking."

“And who could blame him? It's still hard to believe,” he continued.
