A New Mexico Circle K clerk who shot an accused armed robber, says she was suspended for two weeks by the company.

“He pointed the gun at my face, I grabbed my gun from my pocket, I cocked it and I shot,” Jennifer Wertz told KOAT-TV.

“He stepped into the door pointed the gun at me - and I reacted.”

Wertz says she had her gun with her Monday because she was supposed to work until 10 p.m. She said she feels uncomfortable walking to her car at night.

She said she was not behind the counter when a man barged in the Circle K with a gun.

Police say 23-year-old Ferron Mendez was shot in the torso and is expected to survive.

Circle K suspended Wertz for two weeks for shooting the suspect. Hertz is now looking for another job.

The convenience store management did not respond to KOAT's requests to comment on the incident.
