It’s usually always very sad when someone so young loses their life. In Chicago this past weekend, two teenagers were shot dead — a 16-year-old and 17-year-old. While these shootings are often gang related, only one of the teenagers killed appears to have been a targeted shooting.

The two teenagers were the only people killed this past weekend in shootings across the Chicagoland area, with another 15 people wounded. This is slightly up from the previous weekend, which saw at least one person killed and another 14 wounded in shootings.

Here’s the report of the two teenagers who died in separate shootings, according to the Chicago Sun-Times:

A 16-year-old girl was fatally shot Saturday in Little Village on the Southwest Side.

About 9:45 p.m., Angie Monroy was walking on the sidewalk in the 2300 block of South Rockwell Street when shots were fired, Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. She was struck in the head and rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.

She died the next day, according to the medical examiner’s office.

A teen boy was also shot to death earlier that afternoon in South Shore.

About 4 p.m., 17-year-old Isaih D. Maclin was in an alley in the 10800 block of South Hoxie Avenue, when he was approached by multiple people who fired shots at him, police and the medical examiner’s office said. He was struck six times in the chest, twice in the neck and pronounced dead at the scene.

Monroy was simply walked down the street when her life was taken. Unfortunately, that cliched phrase of not being able to walk down the street without fearing for your life seems to actually be true in certain parts of Chicago — namely parts of Chicago’s West and South sides.

Sadly, the Maclin shooting appears to be of the targeted variety.

In terms of the total number of weekend shootings, Chicago has almost reached the 1,000-mark. Since Memorial Day weekend, when MRCTV began keeping track of the weekend shootings in Chicago, 995 people in total have been shot on weekends, with at least 138 dying from their wounds.

The Chicago Tribune, who keeps data for the total number of Chicago shooting victims for the entirety of the year, hasn’t updated their numbers from the previous week. So, as of December 2nd, 2,526 people have been shot in Chicago this year.

It’s becoming more and more sad in the city of Chicago, and that sadness doesn’t always need to be accompanied by a high number of victims to realize that. Week after week goes by, and it seems as though very little is done to stop it. There’s only so much the police can do, especially now that they don’t really have any kind of leader anymore. As for the Mayor Lori Lightfoot, she talks a good game, but it doesn’t appear to be any more than that — talk.
