If you don’t have a driver’s license, but love to drive, move to Cambridge, Massachusetts — especially if you’re in the country illegally.
Cambridge, Mass. has a new law that instructs police officers to give drivers driving without a driver’s license a summons instead of arresting them, all so U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) can’t take illegal immigrants driving without a license into custody.
Local lawmakers have figured out how to circumvent a Massachusetts law already on the books that “requires drivers to show proof of legal status in order to obtain a driver’s license,” according to WFXT-TV.
Just don’t arrest them. By giving unlicensed drivers a summons, lawbreakers avoid being fingerprinted, which can tip ICE off as to the whereabouts of someone in the U.S. illegally.
Cambridge City Councilor Quinton Zondervan used the ‘orange man bad’ excuse as to why local officials enacted the new law.
“We need to protect our community members from a federal government that’s out of control," said Zondervan. “There are no other reasons for the police to arrest someone, give them a court summons instead which keeps them out of the clutches of the Trump administration.”
“No other reasons?” How about them being the country illegally? When did the word “illegal” lose its meaning? Did I miss a memo or something?
WFXT-TV got comments from random people who also apparently don’t understand the meaning of the word “illegal.”
“Targeting people for minor violations really sets them back,” Alex King said.
Yeah, no biggie. Entering the U.S. illegally really is a “minor violation.” I know the dude was talking about not having a driver’s license, but he used that as what he perceives a roadblock for people in the country illegally. Even driving without a license shouldn’t be considered a “minor violation.” Why even have driver's licenses then if you can continue to drive without one knowing you're only going to get a slap on the wrist?
Let me put this in really simple terms. If you want to drive legally, you need a driver’s license to drive a vehicle. If you don’t have a driver’s license, don’t drive. Although, to be fair, a large portion of people that have driver’s licenses shouldn’t be driving.
They’re called turn signals, people! Use them! Sorry, pet peeve of mine.
Don’t want to be arrested or deported? Well, you can either be a legal citizen who has a driver’s license or — and this is just a hunch — don’t enter into the country illegally.
Once again, if you don’t want to deal with the consequences, don't do the crime.
