California Gov. Gavin Newsom has banned the sale of all gas-powered cars beginning by the year 2035, making the Golden State the first in the country to lose this specific portion of their minds.
Newsom is blaming “climate change” for the big-government power grab, a bogey monster he’s also blamed for the massive wildfires that have destroyed much of California this year thanks to arsonists and idiots lighting fireworks…er…yeah, climate change.
Hilariously, Newsom pointed to “more choice” as a reason to ban gas-powered cars.
“We want more choice. We want cleaner air," he said. "We want to increase our manufacturing base and we want to increase our expertise. That's what we think we are significantly advancing here."
Gas-powered cars will be grandfathered into the new rules, meaning that if you like your old car, you can keep it – that is, at least, unless the leftist overlords change their minds. The rule also mandates that all medium and heavy-duty trucks be 100% emission-free by 2045 “where feasible.”
While the order, however ridiculous and fascist, does provide people can buy new gas-powered cars until 2035 and giving the electric industry time to catch up, it’s worth noting that there’s a pretty hefty price tag difference between electric vehicles and their gas-guzzling cousins – and a substantial one, at that. While you can buy a used gas-powered vehicle for a few thousand bucks, an electric car will set you back between $30,000 and $40,000, with limited choices and fewer used options on the market. While Newsom's hope is that the order will inspire companies to manufacture more affordable electric options, it remains to be seen whether car manufacturers will modify the bulk of their manufacturing base to appease one state's new rule.
To those who know California, and to all those who’ve been fleeing it, this doesn’t come as much of a surprise. At 47.3 cents per gallon, California’s gas tax is already among the highest in the country. The state also has a spate of “climate change” rules in place already, including a ten-cent fee on all plastic shopping bags and a law that threatens waiters if they offer plastic straws to customers without first being asked.
