Two students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida were arrested on Tuesday for bringing weapons on campus, local station WSVN reports.
It has not been specified what weapons were brought onto school premises.
There was also a third student taken in for a mental health examination under the Baker Act for allegedly making a threat against students at the school on Snapchat, where he reportedly showed a gun and bullets, according to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.
ABC Action News reports that Florida Governor Rick Scott after hearing of the arrests requested that armed officers be placed at every entrance of the high school.
"Today, I am requesting that immediate action be taken to require an armed law enforcement officer to secure every point of entry at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School while students are on campus," he wrote in a letter to Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel and Superintendent Robert Runcie. "To help with this goal, the state is willing to provide assistance from the Florida Highway Patrol, until a more permanent safety plan can be put into place. Please let my office know what is needed from FHP by the end of the week. Also, Broward County Schools and the Broward County Sheriff’s Office should inform the Florida Department of Education when this request is complete and what other steps are being taken to keep students safe on campus. We must work together to ensure that no family will have to endure the loss of a child because of a school shooting in Florida."
The sheriff’s office also revealed on Tuesday that a deputy assigned to patrol the school was suspended this week after a sergeant found him sleeping in his patrol car while on duty.
Deputy Moises Carotti was first spotted asleep in his patrol vehicle by a student and reported to a sergeant.
“The news comes just one day after the arrest of Zachary Cruz, the brother of admitted Stoneman Douglas shooter Nikolas Cruz. Zachary was arrested for trespassing on the school’s property, and is being held on $500,000 bond,” WSVN reports.
Students at the school expressed concern to WSVN that even with a larger police presence on campus, Zachary Cruz was able to walk right in.
Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School is the site of the deadly Valentine’s Day mass shooting that left 17 people dead and several seriously injured.
The Broward County Sheriff's Office has faced a firestorm of criticism for its missteps leading up to the shooting and former deputy Scot Peterson's actions the day of the shooting, caught on video standing outside of the building while the massacre unfolded inside.
Peterson resigned after being suspended and is under investigation for his actions.
