South Korea announced on Thursday that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has pledged to “refrain from any further nuclear or missile tests” and is eager to meet with President Trump “as soon as possible.”
“I told President Trump that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is committed to denuclearization,” said South Korean National Security Adviser Chung Eui-yong speaking from the White House on Thursday. “He pledged that North Korea will refrain from any further nuclear or missile tests.”
“He understands that the routine joint exercises between the Republic of Korea and the United States must continue,” he went on. “And he stressed his eagerness to meet with President Trump as soon as possible.”
Eui-yong noted that Trump “appreciated the briefing” and agreed to meet Kim Jong Un by May “to achieve permanent denuclearization.”
He said that the U.S. and South Korea are “optimistic” about “the possibility of a peaceful resolution” and insist on not repeating “the mistakes of the past.”
South Korean officials came to the White House on Thursday to brief U.S. officials on its most recent talks with North Korea. According to Fox News, South Korean officials delivered a letter from Kim Jong Un to Trump inviting him to meet.
The announcement comes on the heels of a series of sanctions on North Korea and heated exchanges between President Trump and the rogue regime's dictator.
