Two people were killed and at least four people were injured in a shooting at University of North Carolina, Charlotte, on Tuesday.

Reuters reports,

Local media reported that a suspect believed to be a student at the school was taken into custody.

Television station WBTV in Charlotte reported that gunfire erupted about 5:45 p.m. (2145 GMT) near the university's Kennedy Hall administrative building, and that one person had been arrested.

The Mecklenburg EMS, an independent agency that handles emergency services for the county, confirmed on Twitter that two people were dead on the scene and that four others were taken to a nearby hospital, two of them with life-threatening injuries. A spokesman, Lester Oliva, also confirmed the casualty toll.

The shooting suspect is being reported to be a 22-year-old history major at UNCC.

The shooter has been arrested.

The shooter's motive has not been revealed and an investigation is ongoing.

During the shooting the university’s alert system warned students of “shots reported near Kennedy” and instructed them to “Run, Hide, Fight. Secure yourself immediately.”

The shooting prompted a large police response.

Local station WSOC reports that there were many students on campus at the time of the shooting because of a Waka Flocka Flame concert that was supposed to take place Tuesday night. All university activities have since been cancelled.

UNCC’s Police Chief Jeff Baker in a press conference said that the shooter was armed with a pistol.

He said that the suspect was not someone “on our radar."
