There’s your typical drug bust, and then there’s...this.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, partnering with the Caribbean Corridor Strike Force, just nabbed four drug smugglers this week and seized a stunning 1.6 tons of cocaine, carrying a street value of around $80 million.

Officials stated the smugglers -- Wilson Cuevas-Alcántara, Evelio Rivera-Jiménez, Tairo Martínez-De Rosario and Juan C. Rodríguez – have been charged in the U.S. with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine and possession of cocaine.

The drug smugglers were reportedly heading toward the Rio Grande River on Monday when their boat was spotted by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection aircraft. And naturally, because they were carrying a whole mess of illegal drugs, the four men didn’t stop when ordered by the marine interceptor unit for inspection. So, immigration officers shot their engines out.

After boarding the craft, Coast Guard officials and their international partners arrested the four guys, two of whom had jumped overboard. They then found 48 bales filled with 1,449 individual bricks of cocaine.

The perps now face 10 years to life in prison for smuggling narcotics.

While this is actually a pretty hefty drug bust, it’s just one in an uncountable list of drug interceptions at or near the U.S. border. A recent report showed about 90 percent of cocaine used in the United States comes into the country via Mexico. On top of that, a solid 95 percent of our heroine is funneled through the Central American corridor.

In addition to hardcore narcotics, there’s plenty of weed being shipped/walked/chucked by cannon over the porous border, too. On Tuesday, border agents stumbled upon 51 bundles of marijuana, valued at around half a million, on the U.S. side of the Mexico border. And all that’s on top of the 402 pounds of methamphetamine, 344 pounds of marijuana, 55 pounds of cocaine and seven pounds of heroin they found over the weekend.

Remind me why that wall would be stupid, again?
