Black Lives Matter (BLM) recently slammed the filibuster in a call to action titled, “The Racist, Anti-Democratic, Jim Crow-Era Tool That Prevents Our Priorities from Becoming Laws.”

The Marxist organization blamed the filibuster for failed legislation and provided a form for supporters to contact their senators, urging them to end the long-held practice.

Since 60 votes are required to end the unlimited debate known as the filibuster, progressive legislation has been unable to pass through the 50-50 partisan divide of the Senate, which is why BLM views it as an obstacle.

“There are so many pieces of legislation that have the potential to advance the future of Black lives but have been prevented from going anywhere due to the filibuster,” according to the official BLM website.

BLM specifically cited Medicare for All, D.C. Statehood, For the People Act, the BREATHE Act, and “confronting climate change” as issues or legislation that could have had an easier time being passed had it not been for the “racist” filibuster.

To manufacture outrage and importance of ending the filibuster, BLM declared that “Everything is at stake here” and that “it will continue to prevent our democracy from living up to its potential and will remain yet another way to protect white supremacy in the Senate.”

Historically, the filibuster has been a safeguard of minority rights, protecting against tyranny of the majority as it requires 60 votes rather than a simple majority of 51 senators to end debate.

BLM views it differently, however, accusing the constitutional provision of upholding white supremacy and preventing legislation that moves towards “Black liberation.”

Before concluding with another call to action, BLM self-righteously opined: “The filibuster needs to end, immediately. We won’t stop fighting until it’s gone — because until it’s gone, we won’t be able to advance our democracy, and Black liberation gets further out of reach.”
