Biden: GOP Election Integrity Efforts are Biggest Threat 'Since the Civil War’

Speaking at the National Constitution Center on Tuesday, President Joe Biden slammed the nationwide efforts by Republicans to secure election integrity as “the most significant test of our democracy since the Civil War.”

“The assault on free and fair elections is not just a threat," Biden said, according to the Daily Caller. "Literally – I’ve said it before – we’re facing the most significant test of our democracy since the Civil War. That’s not hyperbole.”

The speech, given in Philadelphia, Pa., focused on the GOP-led efforts to establish voter ID and other election security measures across the country.

Biden also called the election integrity efforts an “unfolding assault” and an “attempt to suppress and subvert the right to vote in fair and free elections.”

Pennsylvania was one of the states at the center of the election legitimacy disputes after the 2020 presidential election — in which 72 percent of Republicans distrust the results, according to NPR.

The president’s comments blasting the GOP came on the heels of Texas Democrats’ push for the progressive narrative on Monday when they fled the state’s special session to deprive the House from reaching quorum, the New York Post reported.

Instead of voting on their state’s election reform bills, the Texas House Democrats lobbied on behalf of the Democratic voting efforts at the federal level.

Ahead of Biden’s speech, Pennsylvania state Sen. Doug Mastriano (R) penned a letter asking to meet with the president in regard to election security measures in his state.

“Millions of Pennsylvanians have serious doubts about the accuracy of the 2020 General Election,” he wrote.

In the letter, Mastriano called for a full forensic audit as a necessary step and asked that the Biden administration come alongside the efforts “to restore trust” in the system.

“We need to come together as a transparent forensic investigation of the 2020 election in Pennsylvania,” Mastriano wrote in the letter, which he posted to Twitter.
