Beto O'Rourke Says Short Commutes Are a 'Right'

1.1k views

Adding to the rapidly expanding laundry list of things liberals want to give away for “free,” Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke has come up with yet one more item he claims should be an inherent “right” for everyone: commuting.

More specifically, a short one.

According to O’Rourke, it’s an injustice worthy of government intervention that some low-income people are driving 2 to 3 hours to work their minimum-wage jobs. And while he doesn’t exactly give proof of this supposedly systematic problem, he does have a proposal to solve it – by setting up government-regulated, mandated low-income housing in wealthier neighborhoods to level the playing field for both jobs and education.

“What if, as we proposed to do, we invested in housing that was closer to where you work –very often mixed-income housing, meaning the very wealthiest are living next to those who are not the very wealthiest in this country – to make sure they can both afford to go to the same public schools?” O'Rourke explained to a crowd of supporters in a new promo video.

This “solution,” O’Rourke claims, would mean people could “come together without regard to your income, or your race, or your ethnicity.”

"Living close to work shouldn't be a luxury for the rich. It's a right for everyone," O'Rourke claimed in a tweet accompanying the clip.

O’Rourke also suggested investing more federal money in public transportation and high-speed rail systems so those without cars can get to their jobs more easily.

In completely unrelated news that has absolutely nothing to do with Beto’s suggestion whatsoever, here’s your friendly reminder that Amtrak, the government-subsidized railway system that already does exist, has lost money every year since 1970, including $194 million in 2017 alone.
