On New Year’s Day, people rallied in front of St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department headquarters to show their appreciation for our men and women in blue, reported USA Today.

“I think it’s been too quiet," said a participant. "You know, when we see a police officer, we say hey, we support you ma’am. But we need to show up in numbers like this.”

Participants in the rally released dozens of blue balloons into the sky, held up signs with phrases such as "We Back The Badge," and chanted peacefully in celebration of the work police officers do on behalf of their communities.

Touched by how persons across the region, as far as 200 miles away, traveled to St. Louis to gather in their support, local officers came out to greet and thank the crowd.

In return, the group promised the officers their continued support.

“We should all stand up and let [police] know we are proud of what they do,” another rallier said.

“They should hold their heads high.”

In another show of support, a group of Chicagoans came together to tie large blue ribbons on trees lining their neighborhood streets, hoping to positively influence the ongoing narrative of contempt for the police.
