Despite the divisive natures of the mayor of Chicago and the governor of Illinois, there’s sometimes more than just negatives to report about the weekend goings-on in the city of Chicago. Yes, people are still being killed and wounded at way too high a rate, but the city’s officers are also doing good work taking illegal guns off the streets. In a city of nearly three million people, you have to take victories where you can, even in the face of such violent turmoil.

Unfortunately, at least eight more people were killed and another 19 were wounded in shootings over the weekend across the Chicagoland area.

This brings the running total that MRCTV has been keeping since Memorial Day weekend up to 704 weekend shooting victims, 97 of which died as a result of their wounds.

Here’s an example of this past weekend’s violence, according to the Chicago Sun-Times:

Before dawn, another man was fatally wounded in Gresham on the South Side.

The 23-year-old was sitting in the driver’s side of his vehicle with friends about 2:30 a.m. in the 8300 block of South Peoria Street, police said. As his friends got out of the vehicle, someone pulled alongside in another vehicle and opened fire.

The man was hit multiple times in the head and body, police said. He was taken to St. Bernard Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

In some positive news for the Windy City, Chicago Police Department (CPD) spokesman Anthony Guglielmi reported that “over 80 weapons were seized, and more than 30 people were arrested on illegal gun charges” over the weekend, according to Fox 32 - Chicago.

CPD has reportedly seen a 19 percent increase in recovering illegal guns this year over 2018, with 8,022 illegal guns being taken off the streets since the beginning of the year.

While we’re still seeing way too many people being murdered — even one is too many — at least there’s some kind of progress in getting the weapons and the criminals firing the weapons off the streets.

There’s still a long way to go, but the news coming from Chicago can’t be all negative all the time, can it?
