Throughout January, a town in New Hampshire will fly an atheist flag above a monument to the Ten Commandments.

New Hampshire Public Radio reports an “A” flag, which was donated by the Freedom From Religion Foundation, will fly in Somersworth’s Citizen’s Place for the rest of the month. The flagpole is adjacent to the monument.

According to the Union Leader, Freedom From Religion Foundation member Richard Gagnon originally wanted the atheist flag to fly in December, but settled for January. January is reportedly “Diversity and Tolerance Month.”

Residents of Somersworth are allowed to ask the government if they can fly their flags by the Ten Commandments monument.  The Union Leader claims that in February, the town will hoist a flag dedicated to Team USA. In March, there will be a flag celebrating St. Patrick’s Day.

Mayor Dana Hilliard stood in front of a painting of Martin Luther King Jr. while he heralded the flag as a sign of inclusion for the town.

“’We the People’ means just that. We the Christians and the Jews. We the Caucasians, African Americans, Latinos and Asians. We the gays and straight. We the rich and poor. We the men and women. We the believers and non-believers,” he said.

He also reportedly joked, “Maybe August next time?”
