Oh, the stupid...it burns.
And by stupid, I mean the latest drivel to come out of NY Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's word-hole.
During a virtual town hall over Zoom this weekend, the self-proclaimed "Democratic socialist" tried to explain away the recent uptick in crime throughout NYC just as the city's Democratic leadership agreed, at the demand of left-wing protesters, to slash $1 billion from the NYPD's budget.
Simultaneously, during the month of June the NYPD reported a 130 percent uptick in the number of shootings, a 30 percent increase in murders, a 118 percent surge in the number of burglaries, and a 51 percent increase in the number of car thefts -- all while arrests dropped by 40,000. In one particularly brutal incident last week, surveillance footage showed a man being shot dead in an intersection in broad daylight while walking with his six-year-old daughter.
And according to AOC, it's all because more people need to "shoplift some bread" to "feed their child."
"Do we think this has to do with the fact that there’s record unemployment in the United States right now?" AOC rambled on the video call. "The fact that people are at a level of economic desperation that we have not seen since the Great Recession?"
"Maybe this has to do with the fact that people aren't paying their rent & are scared to pay their rent," she went on. "They need to feed their child and they don't have money so... they feel like they either need to shoplift some bread or go hungry."
Come to think of it, perhaps we should given all these poor criminals the benefit of the doubt, assuming they also needed to hijack a car, shoot the store clerk and murder their neighbor - you know, to "feed their child."
Then again, to the left, there's always an excuse for why someone is justified in stealing something from someone else. So really, this doesn't come as much of a surprise.
