The pile of trash  — excuse me, high school teacher Gregory Salcido — in Pico Rivera, Calif. who called U.S. service members “dumbshits” and the “lowest of our low" has been fired after the El Rancho Unified School District unanimously voted to oust the abusive teacher.

Salcido is also a councilman on the Pico Rivera City Council, but he outwardly refused to resign from his post during a City Council meeting last month.

“The classroom should never be a place where students feel that they are picked at, bullied, intimidated,” Board of Education President Aurora Villon said, according to the L.A. Times.

Salcido was caught on a student’s cell phone camera disparaging members of the U.S. military. The student who filmed Salcido had worn a Marine Corps sweatshirt, and that was enough ammunition for Salcido to go on his rant.

For those who don’t remember Salcido’s comments — and want to be pissed off at what he said again — watch the video below:

The L.A. Times said that Salcido couldn’t be reached for comment, but one of Salcido’s former students Jeovany Zavala spoke in his defense.

“You taught me that I could be the best that I could be in school and in life without having to risk my life or to pursue what I thought was my only option," said Zavala. "You taught me more than that and I'd like to thank you. I know I might stand alone in that decision tonight.”

Sure, the military isn’t for everyone, but that doesn’t make it okay to denigrate those who make the decision to fight for the right of someone to say such ridiculous comments. People have the right to say what Salcido said, but they also need to understand the repercussions for such comments in the court of public opinion.
