A Yazidi girl who was captured and sold into sex slavery for ISIS militants described her terrifying experience on the Victoria Derbyshire Program on BBC

The young girl whose name is Ekhlas was captured at the age of 14 by ISIS forces, who in 2014 began targeting the Yazidi's, an ethnic Kurdish group. After trying to escape the jihadists in northern Iraq, she was recaptured and held as a sex slave for six months.

Ekhlas was one of around 50,000 Yazidi's who fled to Mount Sinjar to escape the terrorist group while they killed men and took women and children from the region. She described how she ended up with her captor saying, "He picked me out of 150 girls by drawing lots. He was so ugly, like a beast, with his long hair. He smelt so bad, I was so frightened I couldn't look at him."

During her time as a slave, Ekhlas claimed that she was beaten and raped on a daily basis. She was left with very few options to end her torment. She said in her interview that she "tried more than once to kill myself," but was later able to find an out.

While her captor was out fighting in the territory, Ekhlas managed to find the means to escape and reached a refugee camp.

During her interview, she said, "How am I telling you this without crying? I tell you I ran out of tears."

Since the tragic ordeal, Ekhlas now lives in Germany where she is receiving therapy and education in a psychiatric hospital. She aspires to become a lawyer.

Although she may have gone through a hell most of the world wouldn't even begin to understand, the sad truth is that she is one of the lucky ones.

It is estimated that around 9,900 Yazidis were killed or captured when ISIS took over Mount Sinjar in 2014. Further analysis shows that a third may have been killed execution style or died from starvation, dehydration or injuries during the ISIS siege.
